To make a text based game, start by picking free software, like Inform 7. Once you pick your software, familiarize yourself with the text commands and plan out the map or player progressions. Description of The Hobbit
One of the first computer games based on Tolkien's works are based, appropriately enough, on his first Middle Earth novel The Hobbit. The game follows the book's plot very closely, as you guide Frodo's ancestor Bilbo the hapless Hobbit and his band of equally clueless neighbors into their first grand adventure.

The game was revolutionary for its time, with vibrant graphics, big vocabulary, and surprisingly robust NPC interaction.

I played this for what seemed like thousands of hours and you'd be amazed at what I can do with a strap on Bilbo.

I am looking for the book that came with The Hobbit from Melbourne house, the book was a like a dice roll game where depending on what you rolled would send you to a page/line further in the book and then you roll again after reading a bit and it may send you elsewhere in the book either further on or back. I've been looking for this book for years as I wish to teach my son programming and this will be a good way to start by making the book into a text based program.

no way to mount game - if, you are probably using DOS BOX & have mounted the HOBBIT folder - there is NO .exe to start game - the files within folder are both titled HOBBIT but, when you enter HOBBIT, it says illegal command -- no way to start game as the .exe is missing
